Cataracts

The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens, it becomes too hazy. Cataracts make it so that light can't pass through easily and it becomes scattered.

The image cast of the retina then becomes blurry. Changes within the protein material of the lens are responsible for cataracts. Although changes in a lens is a natural part of aging, some factors may cause cataracts to worsen. These factors may include long-term exposure to sunlight, diabetes, smoking, injury to the eye, and long-term use of steroid medications.
